The different types of aerosols: characteristics and differences

“Aerosol” is the word that indicates the “haze» Composed of a mixture of air and liquid. The difference between the different types of aerosols lies precisely in the way this gaseous solution is created, which is then inhaled through a mask, mouthpiece or nasal fork/shower.

Pneumatic devices

Aerosol net or vibrating membrane
These are small (often pocket-sized) aerosols that work with an oscillating membrane that nebulizes the drug. Light and quiet, they are ideal especially when travelling.

Piston Aerosol
In this device, a compressor produces a flow of air which is pushed into the ampule containing the medicine. The depression that is created transforms the liquid medicine into gas, and brings it up to the mask, through which it is inhaled. I am noisy devices but they have the advantage of being able to be used with all types of drugs. The best piston sprays are those with a plastic bulb.

Ultrasonic Aerosol

In this type of equipment there is a ceramic disc that operates at high frequency. This produces waves that hit the liquid medicine, breaking it into micro-droplets. They are devices silent which allow you to do a therapy in less than 15 minutes. The downside is that they are not suitable for certain medications, such as cortisones, which are widely used. They are also often more delicate and prone to breakage.

Aerosol accessories

  • Ampule: is the part of the aerosol into which the liquid medicine is poured. It can be in glass or plastic (preferred) and in ultrasonic devices it is often disposable.
  • Hide: is theaccessory most used by children and adults. It works well on all types of infections but should be kept snug against the face. What needs to change is breathing: for diseases of the upper respiratory tract (eg sinusitis, otitis, rhinitis) it is necessary to inhale through the nose. In case of bronchitis, it is necessary to breathe with the mouth.
  • Mouth: it is used for the lower respiratory tract because it prevents the solution from nebulizing in the nose and settling there, sending a smaller quantity to the areas affected by the infection. It is rarely used in children because you have to squeeze it tightly with your mouth and close your nose.
  • Fork: rarely used, it has been replaced by the nasal wash. It is used for the treatment of the upper respiratory tract.
  • Nasal shower / Rinowash: it is used instead of the bulb to introduce the medicine and to nebulize it in the nose.
